Personal Photography: Kimjang

As a photographer, sometimes something is missing! Personal photography. We may go out and photograph the entire world with our best equipment. We may spend countless hours working on capturing the perfect moment and then editing it to perfection. But what about in our personal lives? Are we missing important moments in our own lives or in the lives of those we love? Maybe more precious to us than any other project, and yet do we simply snap a photo or two on our phones?

Of course, I’m guilty of this. But, every once in a while, I remind myself of the importance of personal photography. Even if the resulting images will never be shared with the world, it’s a beautiful thing to document my personal life with my family. Even as I type this, I feel a lack of doing so. As I type these words, I’m once again reminding myself to document what’s most precious. As soon as I arrive home, I will be sure to do so, as the situation permits.

I’m reminding myself of personal photography as I examine some past work. In January 2021, the family, including my wife, son, and me, along with my wife’s parents and sister, got together for the annual Kimjang. Kimjang is ‘making of kimchi’, it’s common for families to gather and make large batches of kimchi for the year. When doing so, I took some moments to photograph. Many of the images are more personal, and so I’m sharing only a few that include my son, instead of the whole family.

The images serve as a nice memory.

That’s a wrap for today!
